SUMMARY:National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day
DESCRIPTION:National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day\nNational Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NBHAAD) is dedicated to raising awareness about the disproportionate impact of HIV on Black and African American communities. First observed in 1999\, NBHAAD highlights the importance of community involvement and improved access to HIV education\, prevention\, testing\, and treatment services. \nAccording to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)\, national HIV prevention efforts led to a 10 percent decrease in the number of Black or African American people diagnosed with HIV between 2017 and 2021. Despite this decrease\, HIV continues to have a disproportionate impact in Black communities. In 2021\, 40 percent of new HIV diagnoses occurred in Black and African American people\, although this population accounted for only 13 percent of the total population. This disparity is even wider in the South\, where Black and African American people accounted for 49 percent of new diagnoses in 2021 but comprised only 19 percent of the population. In addition\, the majority of new HIV diagnoses occur in Black or African American gay\, bisexual\, and other men who have sex with men (MSM). Within this population\, young Black and African American MSM are the most affected subpopulation—three of four new HIV diagnoses in Black and African American MSM are among people ages 13-34.

SUMMARY:International Condom Day
DESCRIPTION:International Condom Day\nAccording to the World Health Organization\, over 1 million people globally acquire an STI every day\, and 117 million new HIV infections since 1990 have been averted thanks to condoms. This is why\, on International Condom Day and beyond\, the world must remember—condoms are safe\, sexy\, and essential to ending HIV/AIDS. \nInternational Condom Day (ICD) was established by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation\, a non-profit organization that was founded in the 1980s as a response to the AIDS epidemic. The first International Condom Day was introduced in 2009 as a fresh way to help people remember the importance of practicing safe sex.

SUMMARY:HIV Is Not A Crime Awareness Day
DESCRIPTION:HIV Is Not A Crime Awareness Day\nFebruary 28 is HIV is Not a Crime Awareness Day\, which was first observed in 2022 by the Sero Project in collaboration with the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation. This awareness day is an opportunity to amplify the voices of those who have been criminalized based on their HIV status. \nLiving with HIV is not a crime\, but in more than 30 states\, people are being imprisoned due to their HIV status. HIV criminalization laws consist of using a person’s positive HIV status in a criminal prosecution\, increasing charges or punishments because the person has HIV.

SUMMARY:National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day
DESCRIPTION:National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day\nNational Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NWGHAAD) is dedicated to raising awareness about the impact of HIV on women and girls. First observed in 2005\, NWGHAAD highlights ongoing efforts to improve HIV prevention\, treatment\, and care services among women and girls. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Women’s Health leads the U.S. government’s NWGHAAD observance. \nDespite tremendous advances in HIV research over the last 40 years\, women—particularly women of color and young women—remain disproportionately affected by HIV. Additional research is critical to understanding the best ways to prevent\, treat\, and cure HIV across women’s lifespans. It is also essential that HIV research prioritizes diverse populations to ensure all women receive access to HIV services that will work for their needs and preferences. \nThe National Institutes of Health (NIH) Office of AIDS Research (OAR) and Office of Research on Women’s Health (ORWH) launched the HIV and Women Signature Program in 2023 to advance the NIH vision for women’s health\, a world in which all women and girls receive evidence-based HIV care\, prevention\, and treatment tailored to their unique needs\, circumstances\, and goals. The Signature Program recognizes the importance of community engagement to ensure that NIH HIV research reflects the concerns of community members and that HIV prevention and treatment services are tailored for different communities and populations.

SUMMARY:National Native HIV/AIDS Awareness Day
DESCRIPTION:National Native HIV/AIDS Awareness Day\nNational Native HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NNHAAD) highlights efforts to address HIV and raise awareness of its impact in American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities. First observed in 2007\, NNHAAD encourages HIV education\, testing\, prevention\, and treatment among AI/AN communities. The National Native HIV Network organizes NNHAAD\, held annually on March 20\, and coordinates related activities. \nIssues such as HIV-related stigma\, lack of awareness\, and limited access to HIV services contribute to a disproportionate impact of HIV in AI/AN communities. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC): \n\nThere were 3\,270 AI/AN individuals with HIV in the United States in 2021.\nThere were an estimated 223 new HIV diagnoses among AI/AN individuals in 2021.\nFor every 100 AI/AN people with HIV\, an estimated 80 people are aware of their HIV status—the lowest rate of any racial or ethnic group.\n\nThe National Institutes of Health (NIH) HIV research program\, coordinated by the NIH Office of AIDS Research (OAR)\, supports research to reduce HIV-related disparities based on race and ethnicity. This includes efforts to better understand and address HIV-related stigma and discrimination\, which can discourage people from accessing HIV services. NIH HIV research also looks at the most effective ways to encourage AI/AN populations to access HIV testing\, prevention\, and treatment services. Efforts to address HIV among AI/AN populations must recognize diversity among Tribal communities and ensure interventions are culturally appropriate.

SUMMARY:National Youth HIV/AIDS Awareness Day
DESCRIPTION:National Youth HIV/AIDS Awareness Day\nNational Youth HIV & AIDS Awareness Day (NYHAAD) highlights the impact of HIV in young people and raises awareness about ongoing efforts in HIV prevention\, testing\, and treatment for this population. First observed in 2013\, NYHAAD is organized by Advocates for Youth\, an organization that works with communities to ensure youth have tools to prevent HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). \nToday’s youth have never known a world without HIV. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC): \n\nIn 2021\, 19 percent of new HIV diagnoses were among young people aged 13-24.\nOnly 6 percent of high school students have ever been tested for HIV. For every 100 people with HIV aged 13-24\, 56 people know their HIV status\, the lowest of any age group in the United States. Getting an HIV test is critical so people know their HIV status and can access treatment\, if needed.\nAmong people aged 13-24 who have been diagnosed with HIV and know their HIV status\, 80 percent received some HIV care\, more than in any other age group. In addition\, 55 percent of people with diagnosed HIV in this age group were retained in care\, and 65 percent were virally suppressed. People with HIV who are virally suppressed have undetectable viral loads and will not transmit HIV to sexual partners\, a concept known as Undetectable = Untransmittable (U=U).\n\nThe National Institutes of Health (NIH) HIV research program\, coordinated by the NIH Office of AIDS Research (OAR)\, supports research on HIV prevention\, testing\, and treatment for different populations\, including youth. This includes research to understand effective strategies to encourage youth to access HIV services.
