SUMMARY:HIV Long-Term Survivors Awareness Day
DESCRIPTION:HIV Long-Term Survivors Awareness Day\nHIV Long-Term Survivors Awareness Day (HLTSAD) honors long-term survivors of HIV and increases visibility of their needs\, health issues\, and journeys. The annual observance on June 5 coincides with the anniversary of the first reported cases of what later became known as AIDS. \nHIV long-term survivors include several groups: \n\nPeople who have had HIV for 10 years or longer\nAdults with HIV who acquired the virus perinatally during or soon after birth\nPeople who were diagnosed with HIV before the availability of antiretroviral therapy (ART) in 1996.\n\nWith decades of successful HIV research and new treatments\, people with HIV are living longer\, resulting in a growing population of long-term survivors. This population may experience complications associated with long-term exposure to the virus\, the toxicity of many early HIV treatments that caused life-altering side effects\, and long-term ART use. HLTSAD encourages advocates to support efforts to improve quality of life for long-term survivors with HIV.

SUMMARY:National HIV Testing Day
DESCRIPTION:  \n\nNational HIV Testing Day\nNational HIV Testing Day (NHTD) was first observed on June 27\, 1995. This is a day to encourage people to get tested for HIV\, know their status\, and get linked to care and treatment. \nAccording to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)\, in 2022\, an estimated 1.2 million people in the United States had HIV\, but 13 percent of people with HIV did not know their HIV status. HIV testing is the pathway to engage people in care and help them stay healthy\, regardless of the test result. People who have a positive HIV test can start antiretroviral therapy (ART) to stay healthy. People who have a negative HIV test can learn how to access HIV prevention options like pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and condoms. CDC recommends that everyone aged 13–64 get tested for HIV at least once as part of routine health care. People with certain risk factors—such as having sex with someone who has HIV\, sharing needles or drug injection equipment\, or being treated for another sexually transmitted infection (STI)—should be tested for HIV at least once per year. \nThe National Institutes of Health (NIH) HIV research program\, coordinated by the NIH Office of AIDS Research\, supports research into new technology that will make it easier for people to get tested for HIV. NIH also conducts research to understand the best strategies to encourage HIV testing and improve access to HIV prevention and treatment services.

SUMMARY:Southern HIV/AIDS Awareness Day
DESCRIPTION:Southern HIV/AIDS Awareness Day\nSouthern HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (SHAAD) is August 20. Founded by the Southern AIDS Coalition\, SHAAD is a day that individuals\, communities\, and organizations can unite to call attention to the disproportionate number of people living with HIV in the South. SHAAD is an opportunity to provide people in the South with HIV testing and linkage to HIV medical care if necessary\, education on HIV prevention\, including ways to stop HIV stigma\, and other HIV-related care resources.

SUMMARY:National Faith HIV/AIDS Awareness Day
DESCRIPTION:National Faith HIV/AIDS Awareness Day\nThe last Sunday in August is National Faith HIV & AIDS Awareness Day (NFHAAD). NFHAAD is a day to engage faith communities to work together for HIV/AIDS education\, prevention\, treatment\, care\, and support\, and to reduce and eliminate stigma and discrimination. \nReaching All HIV+ Muslims in America (RAHMA) and its partners have led the events of this awareness day across the nation\, reaching thousands of people of various faiths across the United States to take a stand against stigma in their congregations to help raise awareness about HIV. RAHMA and its partners lead the planning for NFHAAD. RAHMA held the first NFHAAD observance in 2017. \nFaith communities are encouraged to learn about the status of HIV funding in their state\, nationally\, and internationally\, and take action to sustain and increase HIV prevention\, treatment\, and care services for all who require them. Faith communities fighting for freedom and fairness together can end HIV-related stigma and discrimination—one day\, each year\, until there is a cure!

SUMMARY:National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day
DESCRIPTION:National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day\nSeptember 18 is National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day (NHAAD)\, dedicated to raising awareness about long-term HIV survivors and people living with HIV who are ages 50 and older. Due to biomedical improvements in HIV treatment\, people living with HIV (PLWH)\ncan achieve and maintain viral suppression and live long and healthy lives. \nNHAAD is a crucial opportunity to recognize the unique challenges that older people living with HIV and those at-risk face in accessing HIV testing\, care\, and treatment. Advancements in HIV treatments have lowered the likelihood of AIDS-defining illnesses among\nthose living with HIV\, but HIV-associated conditions such as cardiovascular diseases\, diabetes\, renal disease\, and cancer can persist in older individuals living with HIV. In addition\, greater social isolation\, loneliness\, and stigma can impact the health\nand well-being of older individuals living with HIV. \nIn 2023\, people aged 55 and up accounted for 42% of people living with HIV in the U.S.—with those 55–64 comprising 26% of the population living with HIV\, the largest share of any age group. Despite high prevalence rates\, only a minority of individuals 65 and\nolder have ever tested for HIV. This is likely due to lack of awareness or stigma\, which can affect quality of life\, self-image\, and behaviors such as HIV status disclosure or seeking HIV care. \nPeople aged 55 to 64 accounted for 7% of the 39\,182 new HIV diagnoses in 2023\, and 2% of new diagnoses were among those 65 and older. According to recent CDC data\, 33.4% of people aged 55 to 64 and 33.9% of people aged 65 and older who received a new HIV diagnosis\nin 2023 already had late-stage HIV infection (AIDS) when they were diagnosed—underscoring the need for routinized HIV screening in these populations.

SUMMARY:National Gay Men's HIV/AIDS Awareness Day
DESCRIPTION:National Gay Men’s HIV/AIDS Awareness Day\nNational Gay Men’s HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NGMHAAD) aims to increase awareness of the disproportionate impact of the HIV epidemic on gay and bisexual men in the United States and encourage HIV testing\, prevention\, and treatment services in this population. First recognized in 2008 by the National Association of People with AIDS\, the observance also offers an opportunity to address HIV-related stigma. \nGay and bisexual men accounted for 67% of new HIV diagnoses in the United States and dependent areas in 2022\, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Within this population\, disparities persist among Black and African American and Hispanic or Latino gay and bisexual men\, who received more new HIV diagnoses in 2022 than gay and bisexual men in other groups. In addition\, young men aged 13–24 with HIV are more likely to be unaware of their HIV status than men of different age groups. Multiple challenges—such as racism\, discrimination\, and stigma—contribute to these disproportionate impacts.

SUMMARY:National Latinx AIDS Awareness Day
DESCRIPTION:National Latinx AIDS Awareness Day\nNational Latinx AIDS Awareness Day (NLAAD) raises awareness of the disproportionate impact of HIV on Hispanic and Latino communities in the United States. First recognized in 2003 by the Latino Commission on AIDS (LCOA) and the Hispanic Federation\, NLAAD is observed annually on October 15 to coincide with the last day of Hispanic Heritage Month. \nHispanic and Latino communities across the United States are diverse\, representing a variety of education levels\, incomes\, languages\, and cultures. In 2022\, Hispanic and Latino individuals accounted for 32 percent of new HIV diagnoses in the United States\, although they represented 19 percent of the total U.S. population\, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In particular\, those who are recent immigrants\, have completed less formal education\, or have limited English proficiency are disproportionately affected by HIV and may be at a disadvantage when accessing HIV testing\, prevention\, and treatment services. \nReducing HIV-related disparities in Hispanic and Latino communities requires improved access to HIV testing\, prevention\, and treatment services. HIV testing is critical for prevention efforts\, so people who have HIV can access treatment and prevent further HIV transmission. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) HIV research program supports research to better understand and reduce HIV-related health disparities based on race and ethnicity. NIH-supported research also aims to increase access to HIV testing\, prevention\, and treatment services and encourage treatment adherence.
