SUMMARY:National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day
DESCRIPTION:National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day\nNational Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NWGHAAD) is dedicated to raising awareness about the impact of HIV on women and girls. First observed in 2005\, NWGHAAD highlights ongoing efforts to improve HIV prevention\, treatment\, and care services among women and girls. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Women’s Health leads the U.S. government’s NWGHAAD observance. \nDespite tremendous advances in HIV research over the last 40 years\, women—particularly women of color and young women—remain disproportionately affected by HIV. Additional research is critical to understanding the best ways to prevent\, treat\, and cure HIV across women’s lifespans. It is also essential that HIV research prioritizes diverse populations to ensure all women receive access to HIV services that will work for their needs and preferences. \nThe National Institutes of Health (NIH) Office of AIDS Research (OAR) and Office of Research on Women’s Health (ORWH) launched the HIV and Women Signature Program in 2023 to advance the NIH vision for women’s health\, a world in which all women and girls receive evidence-based HIV care\, prevention\, and treatment tailored to their unique needs\, circumstances\, and goals. The Signature Program recognizes the importance of community engagement to ensure that NIH HIV research reflects the concerns of community members and that HIV prevention and treatment services are tailored for different communities and populations.

SUMMARY:National Native HIV/AIDS Awareness Day
DESCRIPTION:National Native HIV/AIDS Awareness Day\nNational Native HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NNHAAD) highlights efforts to address HIV and raise awareness of its impact in American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities. First observed in 2007\, NNHAAD encourages HIV education\, testing\, prevention\, and treatment among AI/AN communities. The National Native HIV Network organizes NNHAAD\, held annually on March 20\, and coordinates related activities. \nIssues such as HIV-related stigma\, lack of awareness\, and limited access to HIV services contribute to a disproportionate impact of HIV in AI/AN communities. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC): \n\nThere were 3\,270 AI/AN individuals with HIV in the United States in 2021.\nThere were an estimated 223 new HIV diagnoses among AI/AN individuals in 2021.\nFor every 100 AI/AN people with HIV\, an estimated 80 people are aware of their HIV status—the lowest rate of any racial or ethnic group.\n\nThe National Institutes of Health (NIH) HIV research program\, coordinated by the NIH Office of AIDS Research (OAR)\, supports research to reduce HIV-related disparities based on race and ethnicity. This includes efforts to better understand and address HIV-related stigma and discrimination\, which can discourage people from accessing HIV services. NIH HIV research also looks at the most effective ways to encourage AI/AN populations to access HIV testing\, prevention\, and treatment services. Efforts to address HIV among AI/AN populations must recognize diversity among Tribal communities and ensure interventions are culturally appropriate.
